Warm-up

Talk about these questions with your teacher.
선생님과 이야기해 보세요.

  1. When describing your work experience on a resume, how do you decide whether to use past tense or present tense?
이력서에 경력을 쓸 때, 과거 시제와 현재 시제 중 어떤 것을 써야 할지 어떻게 결정하나요?
  2. Have you ever noticed verb tense errors in your own resume or someone else's? What kind of mistakes were they?
본인이나 다른 사람의 이력서에서 동사 시제 오류를 발견한 적이 있나요? 어떤 실수였나요?

Reading

Read the passage with your teacher.
선생님과 함께 지문을 읽어보세요.

Use either the first person ("I") or the third person (''he," "she") point of view, but use whichever you choose consistently. Verb tenses are based on accurate reporting: If the accomplishment is completed, it should be past tense. If the task is still underway, it should be present tense. If the skill has been used in the past and will continue to be used, use present tense ("conduct presentations on member recruitment to professional and trade associations"). A way of "smoothing out" transitions is to use the past continuous ("have conducted more than 20 presentations...").

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ I manage a team of 10 people and increased sales by 30% last year.
✅ I manage a team of 10 people and increased sales by 30% last year.
✅ (Or, if you left the job) Managed a team of 10 people and increased sales by 30%.

위 문장은 얼핏 맞아 보이지만, 이력서에서는 현재 재직 중인 직장은 현재 시제, 이전 직장은 과거 시제로 통일해야 합니다. 한국어 이력서에는 시제 구분이 거의 없어서 영문 이력서를 쓸 때 과거와 현재 시제를 무의식적으로 섞어 쓰는 실수를 자주 합니다. 현재 하고 있는 업무인지, 이미 완료된 성과인지를 구분하여 시제를 일관되게 사용하세요.
