TV / MOVIES
A lot of people in modern society are hooked on TV. This idiot box has become a “third parent” to our children, and a “second spouse” to married people. These folks seem to feel comfortable only when they are with TV sets. Critics say we learn nothing when we watch TV because there is no room where we can exert our imaginative power over what we’re seeing. We become passive in thinking and in behavior, and this harms our physical as well as our mental health. Another problem for people, especially young ones, is that TV produces copycat behavior. Many legal experts believe the delinquency problem is due to the tendency of young people to imitate what they have seen. What should we do to avoid the bad effects of watching TV? The first step is for parents to decide what their children see. Then parents and teachers need to educate young people on how to watch TV with a critical eye

Korean Trap! /

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.

❌ "I saw that movie in TV last night."
✅ "I saw that movie on TV last night."

마찬가지로 "on the radio," "on the internet"처럼 매체 앞에는 on을 씁니다.

Discussion

Discuss with your teacher.

  1. The passage calls TV a "third parent." Do you agree that TV has that much influence on children, or has the internet now taken over that role?
  2. Have you ever caught yourself imitating something you saw in a movie or TV show — perhaps a catchphrase, a fashion style, or even an attitude? Was it a positive or negative influence?
  3. The passage suggests watching TV with a "critical eye." What specific strategies could parents use to teach children how to consume media more critically?
