No parents are more interested in their children’s education than Korean parents. They have a saying, “no learn, no food.” Korean parents feel it natural to sacrifice any opportunity to enjoy their own lives for the education of their children. Their passion for their children’s education has become the solid basis for the miraculous economic development of the last three or four decades. Most parents in Korea still think a college degree is a necessary “license” to enter society. Now parents show keen interest in so called genius education ? special education for gifted children. This has brought about some bad effects, but the passion goes unabated. Children who are under heavy pressure to study at a young age suffer depression, but aggressive parents ignore this “minor” problem. Is it OK to force children to study against their will. Or should we respect their wishes about whether or not they should study? Do parents have the right to decide what their children should study regardless of the children’s own wishes?
Useful Expressions
Ø college education
Ø diploma
Ø tuition
Ø faculty
Ø teacher
Ø professor
Yes, a college degree is one of the most important things we can get in life. I don’t mean the diploma itself. We learn many important things. We train for a profession, life, love, and human relationships. We learn a lot of things while experiencing the ups and downs of life. But college life provides us with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It forgives your mistakes, permits extremism to some degree, encourages a different life style. How could we ever enjoy the feeling of loving someone, or being loved, more strongly than on a college campus?
Ø Do you think a college degree is a must?
Ø Do you think a college degree helps your child get a better job?
Ø Did you have a part-time job during your school days?
Ø Would you allow your children to have a part-time job?
Ø Who was your favorite teacher when you were in school?
Ø What was/is your favorite subject in school?
Ø Would you teach your young children English?
Ø Do you think we should teach Hanja to our young children?
