1. I can do something means I know how to do it or it is possible for me to do it.
Examples:
I can play a piano. My brother can play the piano, too.
Sarah can speak Italian, but she can't speak Spanish.
2. For past incidents (that happened yesterday/last week, etc), we use could/couldn't.
Examples:
When I was young, I could run very fast.
I was tired last night but I couldn't sleep.
3. We use Can you...? Could you...? when we ask people to do things.
Examples:
Can you open the door, please?
Could you tell me the time, please?
4. We use Can I have...? Could I have...? to ask something.
Example:
Can I have a change for a dollar, please?
5. We use Can I...? Could I...? to ask if it is OK to do something.
Example:
Tom, can I borrow your pen?

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
한국어에서는 "수영할 수 있다"처럼 동사 앞에 조사가 붙지만, 영어에서 can 뒤에는 반드시 동사원형(base form)이 옵니다. "to"를 붙이지 마세요! can + 동사원형이 올바른 형태입니다.
can't 뒤에 과거형 동사(spoke)를 쓰는 실수를 자주 합니다. can/can't/could/couldn't 뒤에는 항상 동사원형이 와야 합니다. 과거를 나타내고 싶으면 동사가 아니라 can을 could로 바꿔주세요.
한국어 "빌려줄 수 있어?"를 직역하면 주어를 "you"로 쓰기 쉽지만, 영어에서는 빌리는 사람이 주어가 됩니다. 또한 can 뒤에는 -ing 형태가 아닌 동사원형(borrow)을 써야 합니다.
