Should + base form of the verb
should do/ should watch, etc.)
I/we/you/they/he/she/it should go, watch, stop, etc.
1. You should do something could mean that it is a good thing to do, or the right thing to do
Examples:
Jeff should go to bed earlier. He goes to bed very late, and he’s always tired.
It’s an interesting movie. You should go and see it.
2. Should I do something? This could mean that it is a good thing to do.
Examples:
Should I invite Francine to lunch?
Should I give my mother a new bag?
3. You shouldn’t do something also means it’s not a good thing to do
Examples:
Jeff shouldn’t go to bed so late.
You shouldn’t see this movie. It’s so dull.
4. We often use “think” with “should”.
Examples:
I think Jeff should buy new clothes.
I don’t think Paula and Jeff should part ways.
Do you think I should ask Francine out?
5. “Should” is different from “have to”.
Examples:
I should study tonight, but I think I’ll go to the amusement park.
I have to study tonight. I can’t go to the amusement park.

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
한국어의 "~해야 한다"를 영어로 옮길 때, "have to" 처럼 "should to"라고 쓰는 실수가 많습니다. 하지만 should 뒤에는 "to" 없이 동사원형만 바로 옵니다. should go, should eat, should study처럼 쓰세요.
한국어에는 주어에 따라 동사가 변하지 않지만, 영어에서는 he/she 뒤에 -s를 붙이는 습관이 있죠. 하지만 should 뒤에서는 항상 동사원형을 씁니다. 주어가 he, she, it이어도 should 다음에는 절대 -s를 붙이지 마세요!
한국어의 "~하면 안 된다"를 영어로 할 때, 일반 동사처럼 "don't should"라고 하는 실수가 많습니다. should는 조동사이므로 부정형은 should + not = shouldn't입니다. don't, doesn't를 쓰지 마세요.
