Must + Base form of the verb
(must be/must know/must have, etc.)
1. We use “must” when we believe something is true.
Examples:
You worked 12 hours today. You must be tired.
My sister has worked at your company for years. You must know her.
Jim hasn’t been calling lately. He must be busy.
Julia eats ice cream everyday. It must be her favorite snack.
Patricia looks really happy. She must be in-love!
2. We use “must not” when we believe that something is not true.
Examples:
Teddy takes the bus everywhere. He must not have a car.
I knocked on the door several times but no one answered. She must not be at home.
3. “Must” can also be used when there is something necessary to do; or there is something necessary NOT to do, like it’s the wrong thing to do
Examples:
You must be careful with that sword. It’s very sharp.
You must not eat inside the church.
4. For the past incidents (that happened yesterday, last week, etc.), we use “had to,” and not “must”
Example:
We had to clean the house yesterday because my mother had some friends over for dinner.
