한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
한국어 "한 번만 더 말해주세요"를 직역하면 'say one more time'이라고 하기 쉽지만, 영어에서는 목적어 'that'이 반드시 필요합니다. 또한 'Please say~'는 직접적이고 다소 명령조로 들릴 수 있으므로, 비즈니스 미팅에서는 'Could you say that one more time, please?'처럼 정중한 요청 형태를 사용해야 합니다. 'Could you ~?'로 시작하면 상대방에게 훨씬 예의 바르게 다시 말해달라고 요청할 수 있습니다.
한국어 "무슨 뜻이에요?"를 영어로 옮길 때 'mean'을 명사로 착각하여 'What is your mean?'이라고 말하는 실수가 매우 흔합니다. 영어에서 'mean'은 동사이므로 'What do you mean?'이 올바른 표현입니다. 비즈니스 상황에서 좀 더 공손하게 표현하려면 'What exactly do you mean?' 또는 'Could you clarify what you mean?'을 사용하세요.
