DAY 5: EXPRESS AN OPINION
SAMPLE QUESTION: Obesity is a major problem linked to various diseases and a growing problem among children. Should having an obese child be considered abuse, in which case the government has the right to step in and intervene Or not? Explain.
1. The teacher will ask the student to determine what type the given question is.
A. Which do you prefer? B. Agree or disagreeC. What is your opinion?
2. Ask the student to choose what subject that is related to the question that he or she can answer easily.
3. The teacher can give an example of an introductory sentence. There are different ways in stating your opinion and the student would need to create sentences that would answer the question using the samples given.

Step 1 Begin your answer by rephrasing the question: I do believe that letting your child eat anything and remain sedentary at home is a form of child abuse and that the government has the right to intervene.
Step 2 First point: Not controlling your child’s weight will slowly lead to diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and risk of heart attacks and strokes that are dangerous for a kid to experience.
Step 3 Supporting reason: A parent who allows his or her children to grow obese are creating a dangerous situation in which the child is being harmed and who is at risk for early death.
Step 4 Second point: This shows that the parent is not competent enough to take care of his or her child.
Step 5 Re-state your stand and conclusion: So, therefore I believe the government has the right to intervene so it could protect the child from further harm.
TEST TECHNIQUES:
To answer the question correctly you must first understand the task. Quickly read the question and summarize it into one single question.Decide on your answer and plan your supporting points (during the 15 sec preparation time).
Choose an opinion and stay with it. Show what it is you are agreeing to, preferring, or supporting by restating the relevant part of the question in your first sentence.

한국어에서는 "반대하다"를 단순히 동사로 사용하지만, 영어에서 'oppose'를 형용사처럼 쓸 때는 반드시 'be opposed to + 동명사(-ing)' 형태를 사용해야 합니다. 또한 'oppose that'은 틀린 표현이며, 전치사 'to'를 써야 합니다. TOEIC Speaking에서 의견을 말할 때 이 구문을 정확히 사용하면 높은 점수를 받을 수 있습니다.
