The past continuous tense (also called the past progressive tense) is commonly used in English for actions which were going on (had not finished) at a particular time in the past.
PATTERN:
Subject + auxiliary verb be + base + ing form
A. It’s 6 o’clock now.
Kelly is at home.
She is watching television.
At 4 o’clock she wasn’t at home.
She was at the tennis club.
She was playing tennis.
She wasn’t watching television.
