- ADVERBS: modify (or add to the meaning of) verbs, adjectives or other adverbs.It may be a word, phrase, or a clause. Commonly used adverbs are: finally______ indeed___ often_______ later there______ soon______however____sometimes probably___ now_______seldom_____ very never______ too_______nevertheless where_____ here______ often The words in BOLD letters are adverbs modifying verbs: Work HARD. Go NOW. Walk QUICKLY. Start IMMEDIATELY Jump UP. Shout ANGRILY. The words in BOLD letters are adverbs modifying adjectives: VERY tall SO far OLD enough QUITE lucky. EXTREMELY fat. TOO few. The words in BOLD letters are adverbs modifying other adverbs: VERY quickly. TOO slowly. LESS noisily SO greedily. QUITE clearly. RATHER hurriedly. Adverbs can also modify phrases or sentences as in the examples below: a.Adverbs modifying phrases: RIGHT in front ALL through the night CLOSE behind us SLIGHTLY to the left IMMEDIATELY in front b. Adverbs modify sentences: LUCKILY, he was not hurt. SURELY, you are wrong! APPARENTLY, they did not know. UNFORTUNATELY, they did not know. CLEARLY, she knew the answers. Identify the adverbs in the following sentences:
