We are inside the belly of the beast, The Soviet-built nuclear power plant in Metsamor, Armenia, which environmentalist say is excellent candidate for “the next Chernobyl.”Ten years after Chernobyl power station in Ukraine exploded, on April 26, 1986, the former Soviet Union is tired of Western Badgering to shut down it’s most dangerous reactors. It is also fed up with technical advice from the West. Increasingly, it is seeking just one thing : money. Meanwhile, the Ukraine government promises to close the two remaining reactors at Chernobyl by the year 2000-but only if the Group of Seven leading industrial nations delivers $3.1 billion in aid.
How much will the West pay to help clean up the Soviet nuclear mess? The United States already has committed $250 million to tighten security around Russia’s stockpiles of plutonium and uranium; $ 408 million to dismantle former Soviet nuclear weapons; and $ 180 million to improve some Soviet-built reactors.Shutting down the worst reactors could billions more. Yet no price is too high if it prevents another Chernobyl, which spewed 200 times more radioactivity 59 than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan.A decade later, Ukraine and Belarus are still spending more than 10 percent of their national budgets dealing with the consequences.
