Reading

Read the passage with your teacher.
선생님과 함께 지문을 읽어보세요.

The purpose of this chapter is to examine a number of common situations, which people have strong opinion about, to see if they are actually true.
1. It is said time and time again that beautiful people die young. I have also often heard that they cannot find happiness in marriage. These, maybe, are the price of being
beautiful. But is either statement true?2. People say that first love is never fulfilled but never dies. Even if you had relationships with other people already, you would find that there is still always a place in your heart for the person you loved first.
3. People believe that appearance is a reflection of your character. Some think that this is also a very important status symbol. If you dress up, it will make a better impression on other folks than if you dress casually. If you drive a sedan, you will get better service at a hotel than if you drive an old car. And so on. Do you agree?
4. Money talks. People who have a lot of it generally find it easier to gain social advantage than those who are poor. Right? That is why it is said, "Money can do everything" and even "Money is everything.", "Money can buy anything, even love" Do you agree?
5. Do you believe in the old saying, "Easy come, easy go"? It means that something that is easy to obtain is not easy to hold on to. If so, why? If not, why not?
6. A lot of people still seem to think sons are more important than daughters, especially in Korea. What do you think about this?
7. "Nothing is impossible if you try". Is this true? Or is it a myth, like the Santa Claus story which was created to make the children feel good?

  3. Can you think of a belief that was once universally accepted but has since been debunked? What led to the change?
  4. Some argue that certain 'myths' persist because they serve a useful social function. Do you agree with this assessment?
