한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ "My wife is a housewife. She doesn't do anything."

✅ "My wife stays home with the kids. She's incredibly busy managing everything."

한국어로 "전업주부"를 설명할 때 "아무것도 안 한다"라고 직역하면, 영어에서는 배우자를 무시하는 매우 무례한 표현이 됩니다. 비즈니스 자리에서 가족을 소개할 때는 상대방에 대한 존중이 담긴 긍정적인 표현을 사용해야 합니다. "She stays home with the kids" 또는 "She manages our household"처럼 구체적이고 존중이 담긴 표현을 쓰세요.

❌ "How old is your daughter? Is she married?"

✅ "Does your daughter live nearby?" / "What does your daughter do?"

한국에서는 자녀의 나이와 결혼 여부를 묻는 것이 자연스러운 대화이지만, 영어권 비즈니스 문화에서는 나이와 결혼 여부를 직접적으로 묻는 것이 사적인 영역을 침범하는 것으로 느껴질 수 있습니다. 대신 "What does your son/daughter do?" 또는 "Does your family live close by?"처럼 열린 질문을 하면 상대방이 편하게 원하는 만큼 공유할 수 있습니다.
