Korean Trap

Korean speakers often make this mistake when handling Q&A.

❌ "I will answer to your question." / "I cannot answer about that."
✅ "I will answer your question." / "I'm afraid I can't answer that."

한국어에서 '질문에 답하다'의 '~에'를 직역하여 'answer to' 또는 'answer about'이라고 하는 실수가 자주 발생합니다. answer는 타동사이므로 전치사 없이 바로 목적어를 취합니다. 또한 거절할 때 'I cannot'보다 'I'm afraid I can't'가 훨씬 정중합니다.

Discussion

Discuss these questions with your teacher after reading.

  1. The passage describes a "TENNIS" technique — returning a question back to the asker. When is this appropriate in a business setting, and when might it seem evasive?
본문에서 '테니스' 기법 — 질문을 질문자에게 되돌리는 것 — 을 설명합니다. 비즈니스 상황에서 언제 적절하고, 언제 회피하는 것처럼 보일 수 있나요?
  2. The text lists "hedging" as a technique: "Well, that depends on what you mean by..." How is hedging useful in Korean business culture where direct refusal can be uncomfortable?
본문에서 '에둘러 말하기(hedging)'를 기법으로 제시합니다. 직접적인 거절이 불편한 한국 비즈니스 문화에서 에둘러 말하기가 어떻게 유용한가요?
  3. The passage shows how to accept criticism: "That's a fair point" and "Up to a point, I agree." How do you respond when someone challenges your ideas during a presentation?
본문에서 비판 수용 방법을 보여줍니다. 프레젠테이션 중에 누군가 당신의 아이디어에 이의를 제기하면 어떻게 대응하시나요?
  4. Practice this scenario: You are presenting the annual budget and a senior manager asks about a confidential cost-cutting plan. How would you handle it using phrases from the passage?
이 시나리오를 연습해 보세요: 연간 예산을 발표하는데 고위 관리자가 기밀인 비용 절감 계획에 대해 질문합니다. 본문의 표현을 사용하여 어떻게 대처하시겠습니까?
