  2. Have you ever attended a presentation where the slides were more distracting than helpful? What went wrong?

Reading Comprehension
Building and Giving Presentation Tips
Tips for Building a Good Presentations:
When you build your presentation think about the following tips:
Title each screen
Use larger fonts and perhaps different style/colours for titles
Don't use too many colours/fonts.
Stick to one font with different sizes and styles (Bold, Italics)
All cards (Screens) must be simple, stand-alone
No more than six bullet points per slide
Use graphics symbols where possible to show ideas
Use pie charts for comparison of components
Use line charts to show trends
Use bar charts to do both
Order points by order of importance - most important first
For impact - combine sound, image and motion (multi-media)
Use lots of white space on screen
Try it out before, eg. Rehearse - is monitor big enough?
Add any missing information
Reasons for converting foils to computer presentation:
easier to revise
easier to navigate (add buttons)
add graphics to slides
add sound and movies to presentation
you can print summaries & output to slides if you really need to.
Tips for Giving the Presentations:
Print out a summary of the presentation and/or create speakers notes for the presentation.
Try out the presentation on a friend, Rehearse and check how long it takes.
Know your audience
Be organized
Don't use jargon
Stand beside monitor not in front of it.
Repeat question asked, if large group
Talk to your audience not to your monitor.
Encourage people to ask questions throughout
Maintain eye contact
Pay attention to the non-verbal signals your audience is giving you and adjust your presentation accordingly.
Hints for giving Video Conferencing presentations

Korean Trap

Korean speakers often make this mistake in presentation English.

❌ "Please look at the monitor. I will read the PPT."
✅ "Please look at the screen. I will walk you through the slides."

'walk you through the slides'(슬라이드를 설명하며 안내하다)가 프로페셔널한 표현입니다.

Discussion

Discuss these questions with your teacher after reading.

  1. The passage advises "no more than six bullet points per slide." Do you follow this rule? What happens when presenters put too much text on slides?
  2. The tip says "stand beside the monitor, not in front of it." Why is positioning important during a presentation, and what other body language tips do you follow?
  3. The text recommends using pie charts for comparisons and line charts for trends. When presenting data at work, how do you decide which type of chart to use?
  4. One tip is to "talk to your audience, not to your monitor." How do you maintain eye contact when you need to reference your slides frequently?
