Grammar Pattern
The End of the Presentation
Ending the main body of the presentation
Okay, that ends (the third of) my talk.
That’s all I want to say for now on….
Beginning the summary and/ or conclusion
I’d like to end by emphasizing the main point (s)
I’d like to end with …
- a summary of the main points
- some observations based on what I’ve said
- some conclusions/ recommendations
- a brief conclusion
Concluding
There are two conclusions/ recommendations
What we need is…
I think we have to …
I think we have seen that we should…
Inviting Questions and/or introducing discussion
That concludes (the formal part of) my talk.
(Thanks for listening)… Now I’d like to invite your comments
Now we have (half an hour) for questions and discussion
Alright. Now, any questions or comments?
So, now I’d be very interested to hear your comments.
Handling Questions:
Understood but difficult or impossible to answer
That’s a difficult question to answer in a few words.
- It could be…
- In my experience..
- I would say
- I don’t think I’m the right person to answer that. Perhaps (Mr Holmes) can
help…
- I don’t have much experience in that field.
Understood but irrelevant or impossible to answer in the time available
I’m afraid that’s outside the scope of my talk / this session. If I were you I’d discuss
that with…
I’ll have to come to that later, perhaps during the break since we’re running out of
time.
Not understood
Sorry, I’m not sure I’ve understood. Could you repeat?
Are you asking if…?
Do you mean…?
I didn’t catch (the last part of) your question.
If I have understood you correctly, you mean…? Is that right?
Checking that your answer is sufficient
Does that answer your question?
Is that ok/
Korean Trap
Korean speakers often make this mistake in presentation English.
'That concludes my presentation' 또는 'That brings us to the end'가 전문적입니다. 또한 question은 복수형 questions를 사용하고, 'Do you have'보다 'Are there any'가 격식 있는 표현입니다.
Discussion
Discuss these questions with your teacher after reading.
- The passage provides several ways to handle difficult questions: "That's not my area," "That's confidential," or redirecting to another person. Which strategy do you feel most comfortable using? Why?
- The text mentions inviting discussion with phrases like "I'd be very interested to hear your comments." Do you think Q&A sessions are valuable or do they often go off-track?
'여러분의 의견을 듣고 싶습니다'와 같은 표현으로 토론을 유도합니다. Q&A 세션이 가치 있다고 생각하시나요, 아니면 자주 본론에서 벗어나나요? - The passage distinguishes between concluding with a "summary," "observations," "conclusions," and "recommendations." When would you use each type of ending?
- Have you ever been in a situation where you were "running out of time" at the end of a presentation? How did you handle it?
