Brent: How was your dinner party?
Adam: I think it went pretty well. People really seemed to enjoy themselves.
Brent: That’s good.
Adam: Yeah, but we shouldn’t have invited my wife’s boss again. We can never get? him to leave!
Brent: Really? How late did he stay this time?
Adam: Until two o’clock in the morning! And we both have to wake up early the next day?
Brent: Oh, he shouldn’t have stayed so late. That was really inconsiderate. You should have asked him to leave earlier.
Adam: Well, it’s pretty difficult to do that to your wife’s boss!

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정
Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
'told him to go home'도 문법적으로 맞지만 직설적입니다. 영어 화자는 불편한 상황을 완곡하게 표현하는 경향이 있어 'asked him to leave'가 더 자연스럽습니다. 상황에 맞는 공손함 수준을 선택하세요.
Discussion
Share your thoughts with your teacher.
선생님과 의견을 나눠보세요.
- Brent says the boss was "inconsiderate" for staying so late. Do you think the boss was unaware or simply didn't care?
- The dialogue uses "should have" and "shouldn't have" structures. In hindsight, what should Adam and his wife have done differently?
- In Korean hoesik culture, it can be difficult to leave before the senior person. Is this social obligation changing with younger generations?
- Adam says, "It's pretty difficult to do that to your wife's boss." At what point does politeness become self-destructive?
- How would this situation play out differently in American versus Korean culture?
