Warm-up

Talk about these questions with your teacher.
선생님과 이야기해 보세요.

  1. The passage frames human cloning primarily as a cure for infertility. Does this framing make you more sympathetic to the technology than if it were presented as creating copies of humans?
  2. Where should society draw the line between scientific progress and ethical boundaries, particularly in reproductive technology?

Human Cloning is the Cure for Infertility by JP Lovell Infertility. Biblical narratives would have us know that it was considered a curse brought upon a household through a hopeless woman. They use the utterly unforgiving word, "barren," which evokes shame both to man and God.For whatever reason, theological or otherwise, infertility can bring some degree of
shame or, at the very least, incompleteness for both man and woman, since it
afflicts both sexes. Thus, like all physical afflictions, it is never wrong to look for a cure.Yet, current methods of assisted reproduction are highly inefficient. Thus, we must
look towards a new techique now being researched albeit with opposition that
generally barks up the wrong tree. This technique is called reproductive cloning or somatic nuclear transfer, which was how Dolly was cloned. Cloning technology offers infertile couples the promise of
greatly improving the odds of having a baby.An infertile man can have sperm cloned and the undamaged sperm used. Likewise, an infertile woman can have an egg cloned and the fertile egg used for conception. In extreme cases a person can be cloned so a sibling is conceived.Regardless of ethical debates about human cloning (there are various essays in this site that intelligently discuss this) it must be a choice offered to infertile parents.
Like a truly democratic nation such as ours, this choice must be protected and
upheld

한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ The technology is developing very rapidly these days.
✅ Technology is advancing very rapidly these days.

Discussion

Share your thoughts with your teacher.
선생님과 의견을 나눠보세요.

  1. The author uses the word "barren" and notes its biblical associations with shame. How have cultural and religious attitudes toward infertility evolved, and how far have they still to go?
  2. The passage claims "it is never wrong to look for a cure" for infertility. Are there any reproductive technologies you believe cross an ethical boundary?
  3. The author argues that cloning "must be a choice offered to infertile parents" in a democratic society. Should personal reproductive freedom override societal concerns about the implications of cloning?
  4. Current methods of assisted reproduction are described as "highly inefficient." Does this inefficiency alone justify the pursuit of cloning, or should we improve existing methods first?
  5. If human cloning became safe and widely available, what unintended social consequences might emerge?
