Talk about these questions with your teacher.

- The author says "What I am is what I do." Do you believe our hobbies and choices truly define who we are, or is identity something deeper?
- Is there a hobby or interest you pursue that others consider unusual or pointless? How do you respond to their skepticism?

I collect stamps because I like doing it. Collecting them is educational because I find out all sorts of things about the people and things on the stamps and the countries they come from. It can also be a profitable hobby, since sometimes the value of stamps goes up astronomically. But these reasons are really just rationalizations. I don’t collect stamps for intellectual or monetary purposes, I do it for fun.The same thing is true for the books I chose to read, the TV shows and movies I watch, the video games I play, the sports I participate in, even the friends I hang around with. No one else has to approve of what I do. Someone else may even think that my choices are silly. But they are part of me because they are mine. They define my personality and are the essence of my being. What I am is what I do!

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정
Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
한국어 '취미로'를 직역하여 'for hobby'라고 하면 틀립니다. 영어에서는 'as a hobby'가 올바른 표현이며, 관사 'a'를 꼭 넣어야 합니다.
Discussion
Share your thoughts with your teacher.
선생님과 의견을 나눠보세요.
- The author admits that educational and monetary benefits are "just rationalizations" for collecting stamps. Why do people feel the need to justify their hobbies with practical reasons?
- The passage states, "No one else has to approve of what I do." To what extent is this attitude realistic in a society that constantly judges personal choices?
- The author claims hobbies "define my personality and are the essence of my being." Could this be overstating the case? Can someone with no hobbies still have a strong identity?
- Stamp values can go up "astronomically." When a hobby becomes profitable, does it lose its purity as a pastime?
- How do cultural expectations in Korea influence which hobbies are considered acceptable or valuable?
Extra Practice
1.Have you ever been a collector? Describe your collection.
2.What hobbies do you have? Why do you enjoy them? How much do you spend on them?

4.What are your five favorite books?
5.What sports do you play? Are you very good at them?
6.What is the most unusual thing you like to do?
7.Talk about the hobbies your family members enjoy?
