  1. The passage calls fashion the most "pernicious" pressure young people face. Do you agree this is stronger than academic or social pressure?
  2. Teenagers often claim to value individuality yet follow the same trends. Is this hypocrisy, or is conformity simply a natural part of forming identity?

Of all the pressures young people face, the most pernicious is that of fashion. By this is meant the current vogue in dress. The teenagers, who are so glib when they speak of “individuality” , are turned into homogeneous mass by the latest craze in fashion. How can youngsters who vehemently resist advice from the older generation become so malleable in the hands of those who “make” fashion? Perhaps the sudden shifts in fashion occur fortuitously. Or is there some group who, through legerdemain, switches styles and customs on us right before our eyes? Today’s teenagers seem to be quite gullible when it comes to embracing the latest trend in fashions. But then, they have their elders as sage examples to follow.

  1. The author describes teenagers as "glib" about individuality yet becoming a "homogeneous mass" through fashion. Is this criticism fair, or does following trends still allow for personal expression?
  2. The passage asks whether fashion shifts occur "fortuitously" or through deliberate manipulation. In the age of social media influencers, how are fashion trends actually created?
  3. The text uses the word "legerdemain" (sleight of hand) to describe fashion industry tactics. To what extent is the fashion industry deliberately deceiving consumers?
  4. The author says teenagers are "gullible" about fashion but adults set the example. Is fashion susceptibility something people outgrow, or does it persist in different forms?
  5. How has K-fashion and Korean pop culture influenced global fashion trends? Is Korea a fashion trendsetter or follower?
