선생님과 함께 지문을 읽어보세요.

Having friends is more important than having good grades. If someone is popular he will always do well in life. He will know who to go for a job or advice, and he will be sure to get the help he needs. Because friends take care of friends. But if someone who is only smart, he will always have to take care of his problems by himself.I don’t think e should only associate with people who are just like ourselves. We can find out an awful lot about life if we deliberately cultivate friendships with people from other income levels and other places. Having foreign friends is especially valuable this regard, since they see the world very differently than we do. Reaching understanding among ourselves is what it means to make friends

Discussion

Share your thoughts with your teacher.
선생님과 의견을 나눠보세요.

  1. The author states, "Having friends is more important than having good grades." Is this an oversimplification, or does social capital genuinely outweigh academic achievement in the long run?
  2. The passage argues that popular people "will always do well in life." Can you think of counter-examples where popularity was actually a disadvantage?
  3. The author encourages us to "deliberately cultivate friendships" with people from different backgrounds. Can genuine friendship be deliberately manufactured, or must it develop organically?
  4. The text claims that being "only smart" means you must solve problems alone. Is this a fair characterization, or can intelligence itself attract meaningful relationships?
  5. "Reaching understanding among ourselves is what it means to make friends." Do you agree with this definition of friendship, or is there more to it?
