Ahh! My house is starting on fire. I don’t know what to do. I’m crying and I don’t know what’s going on.All of a sudden, someone picks me up and starts holding me and they were crying too. I knew right away that it was my brother, my parents were out and he was watching me. He said that our only hope is to jump out the window, run over to our neighbor’s house and call the fire department. So we did jus that. But the fire department wasn’t coming. They said that they were eating their lunch and couldn’t come! Ohhh! Noooo! What are we going to do now?All of a sudden, I wake up and my mom, dad and brother are leaning over me. "It’s going to be OK", they said. "It was just a bad dream."

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ I dreamed a scary dream last night.
✅ I had a scary dream last night. / I had a nightmare last night.

한국어 '꿈을 꿈다'를 직역하여 'dreamed a dream'이라고 하면 부자연스럽습니다. 영어에서는 'had a dream' 또는 'dreamt about something'이 자연스럽습니다.

Discussion

Share your thoughts with your teacher.
선생님과 의견을 나눠보세요.

  1. In the dream, the fire department refuses to come because "they were eating lunch." What does this absurd detail reveal about how dreams process our fears and anxieties?
  2. The child's brother takes charge during the crisis. How do family dynamics play out differently in dreams versus waking life?
  3. The family reassures the child with "It was just a bad dream." Is dismissing a child's nightmare as "just a dream" helpful, or should parents take children's dream experiences more seriously?
  4. Some psychologists believe nightmares serve a purpose in processing trauma and building emotional resilience. Do you think bad dreams have any positive function?
  5. In Korean culture, certain dreams are believed to carry meaning or predict the future. Do you give any significance to your dreams?
