Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make when talking about traffic and accidents.
교통사고에 대해 이야기할 때 한국인이 자주 하는 실수입니다.

❌ I met a traffic accident on my way to work.
✅ I had a traffic accident on my way to work. / I was in a traffic accident on my way to work.

한국어 "교통사고를 만나다/당하다"를 "meet an accident"으로 직역하면 안 됩니다. 영어에서는 "have an accident" 또는 "be in an accident"으로 표현합니다.

❌ You should wear seatbelt when you ride a car.
✅ You should wear a seatbelt when you ride in a car.

두 가지 오류: 1) "seatbelt" 앞에 관사 "a"가 필요합니다. 2) 차 안에 타고 있는 것은 "ride in a car"입니다. "ride a car"는 자동차 위에 타는 것을 의미합니다.

Discussion

Share your thoughts with your teacher.
선생님과 의견을 나눠보세요.

  1. The reading mentions the expression "accident waiting to happen." Can you think of a situation you have seen that was an "accident waiting to happen"?
"사고가 기다리고 있다"는 표현이 나옵니다. "사고가 날 것 같은" 상황을 본 적이 있나요?
  2. Do you think using a cell phone while driving should result in a heavy fine? What about hands-free devices?
운전 중 휴대폰 사용에 무거운 벌금을 부과해야 할까요? 핸즈프리는 어떤가요?
  3. What is a "fender-bender"? Have you ever had one? What did you do?
"접촉사고(fender-bender)"란 무엇인가요? 경험한 적이 있나요? 어떻게 했나요?
  4. Self-driving cars may reduce traffic accidents. Would you trust a self-driving car? Why or why not?
자율주행 차가 교통사고를 줄일 수 있습니다. 자율주행 차를 신뢰하겠어요? 이유는?
