PARIS, April 24.? A planet described as possibly being able to sustain extra-terrestrial life was discovered by astronomers working at the La Silla Observatory in Chile.
The new celestial object was found in a planetary system outside our own solar system. Information about the discovery will be published Thursday in an issue of the scientific journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.
The planet is reportedly in orbit around the star Gliese 581 (G1 581), located 20.5 light years away from Earth. It is the first of about 200 similar planets of its type that "has at the same time a solid or liquid surface and a temperature similar to that of Earth’s." It is also lighter than Earth, said the astronomers.
The new planet has characteristics that "allow us to imagine possible extra-terrestrial life," the Chilean National Scientific Research Center (CNRS) reported. The discovery was made by the CNRS together with Swiss, Portuguese and French scientists.
The average temperature of this "super Earth" is between 0 and 40 Degrees Celsius (32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit) which "would allow for the presence of liquid water on its surface," said Stephane Udry of Geneva, the main author of the research paper.
According to Udry, "The planet’s radius is 1.5 times that of Earth’s." Also its characteristics indicate "a rocky surface (like on Earth), or a surface covered by oceans," the French News Agency AFP reported.
