The unique sounds of ivory-billed woodpeckers convince scientists that the birds are no longer extinct
Bird lovers were chirping back in April when scientists from Cornell University announced they뭗 rediscovered the ivory-billed woodpecker. The rare bird species was thought to have been extinct since 1944. It was rediscovered at Cache River National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Arkansas.
Doubters Silenced by Birds?Song
In July, a small group of ornithologists said they weren뭪 sure the ivory-billed woodpecker was really rediscovered. They said a blurry videotape of the bird wasn뭪 enough evidence. Researchers then decided to send the doubting ornithologists more evidence. They shared an audio recording of the ivory-billed woodpecker뭩 one-of-a-kind, double-rap.
밪ome sounds were explainable only by being an ivory-billed woodpecker,?said John W. Fitzpatrick, director of the Cornell ornithology lab.
The unique sounds made believers out of the ornithologists. 밫he thrilling new sound recordings provide clear and convincing evidence that the ivory-billed woodpecker is not extinct,?said Richard Prum, a scientist from Yale University.
Protecting the Rare Ivory-billed Woodpecker
The ivorybill is the largest woodpecker in the U.S. and has a wingspan of about three feet. The ivorybill began to disappear as loggers cut down forests across the southeast between 1880 and the 1940s. Soon after the ivorybill was rediscovered, the U.S. government announced a $10 million plan to protect the rare bird.
Conservationists are trying to help the woodpecker by killing trees so that the birds will have more food. Sound strange? The woodpecker feeds on beetle larvae found under the bark of dead trees. When the trees are killed, more beetles will likely be attracted to the trees. With more food for the woodpeckers, the species will have a better chance at recovering.
Only about 35 to 50 trees will be cut on four, four-acre sections of land. There are 2,000 to 2,8000 trees on each section. In about two or three years, scientists hope the trees will have lots of beetles for the woodpeckers and the double-rap will be a common sound.

Korean Trap! /
Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
Discussion
Discuss with your teacher.
- The ornithologists who doubted the rediscovery wanted more evidence than a blurry video. Do you think scientists should be skeptical, or should they trust initial findings? Why?
- The ivory-billed woodpecker was rediscovered in a wildlife refuge. How important are protected natural areas for preserving endangered species?
- Researchers used audio recordings of the woodpecker's unique double-rap to prove it still exists. What other methods could scientists use to find and identify rare animals?
