World record holder Robert McDonald launches a ship made of 15 million wooden ice cream sticks
What would you do with 15 million ice cream sticks? Robert McDonald collected and carefully arranged the wooden sticks to build a 50-foot-long replica of a Viking ship. It took two years and 2.2 tons of glue to turn the sticks into a real working ship.
Setting Sail
What뭩 McDonald going to do with the ship? Set sail, of course! Last Tuesday, McDonald launched the ship in Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, McDonald now lives in the Netherlands with his wife and 11-year-old son.
McDonald plans to sail his ship across Europe and the Atlantic Ocean next year. He hopes to follow the same route the Vikings did 1,000 years ago.
"I have a dream to show children they can do anything," McDonald, 45, a former Hollywood movie stunt man, said before the launch. "If they can dream it, they can do it." Also known as "Captain Rob," McDonald is president of the Sea Heart Foundation, an organization that develops projects for children in need.
McDonald named the 13-ton ship the "Mjollnir," after the hammer of the Norse god of thunder, Thor. The inside of the boat was built with a sturdy material called fiberglass. It can be propelled by a mast and sail, or oars, or a motor. The ice cream sticks were donated by an ice cream manufacturer and were sent to McDonald by children in his neighborhood.
For the Record
McDonald claims his ship is the biggest ever made from wooden ice cream sticks. He is hoping the Guinness Book of World Records will soon make that claim official. McDonald made it into the record books in 2003, when he built a Viking ship using 370,000 wooden ice cream sticks. The much larger "Mjollnir" Viking ship is now on display at a show for antique ships in Amsterdam.
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:
1.How many years and how many tons of glue before McDonalds finally finished the ice cream stick ship?
2.What Mcdonald going to do with the ship?
3.Describe Robert Mcdonald, what can you tll about him?
4.What is the name of the ice cream stick ship?
5.If you were Robert McDonald would you do the same thing?

❌ He made a ship by ice cream sticks.
✅ He made a ship out of ice cream sticks.

"made out of"는 재료를 강조할 때 쓰는 표현이고, "made by"는 만든 사람을 나타낼 때 씁니다. 예: The ship was made by Robert McDonald. / The ship was made out of ice cream sticks.

Discussion

Discuss with your teacher.

  1. Robert McDonald said, "If they can dream it, they can do it." Do you agree? Can you think of a time when you achieved something that seemed impossible?
  2. McDonald spent two years building his ice cream stick ship. What kind of patience and dedication does a project like this require? Could you commit to a two-year project?
  3. McDonald plans to follow the same route the Vikings sailed 1,000 years ago. Why do you think people are fascinated by recreating historical journeys? Would you want to sail across the Atlantic on a handmade ship?
