Discovery Docks at Space Station
As scientists check the space shuttle for damage, the crew gets to work at the International Space Station
Space shuttle Discovery docked at the International Space Station on Thursday morning. The crew loaded 15 tons of supplies onto the station. Meanwhile, scientists on the ground were busy examining the shuttle for any damage from liftoff.
Shuttle Checkup
An hour before docking, Commander Eileen Collins performed an amazing feat. She maneuvered the ship into a back flip so digital cameras could take pictures of the shuttle뭩 belly. The pictures are being sent to NASA engineers on earth so they can inspect the shuttle뭩 surface tiles and thermal protection system.
Scientists are trying to find possible damage to the shuttle that may have happened when foam and a piece of tile fell off during launch. "Any damage will not escape our detection," said Wayne Hale, NASA뭩 deputy shuttle program manager.
Grounding the Shuttles
NASA officials have decided not to launch any more shuttles until engineers can figure out how to fix the problem of falling foam. Shuttle Atlantis was scheduled to lift off this September. More launches were also scheduled for 2006.
At the Space Station
After docking safely, the Discovery crew entered the space station. They crew was greeted with hugs, bread and salt (a Russian tradition) and tour of the station by its two crew members, Russian commander Sergei Krikalev and American John Phillips. The Discovery crew is scheduled to return to earth on August 7.

Korean Trap! /

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.

❌ The shuttle was docked to the space station.
✅ The shuttle docked at the space station.

Discussion

  1. Commander Eileen Collins performed a back flip maneuver so cameras could photograph the shuttle's belly. Why do you think inspecting the shuttle's surface was so important?
  2. The crew loaded 15 tons of supplies onto the space station. What kinds of supplies do you think are most essential for astronauts living in space?
  3. Foam and a piece of tile fell off during Discovery's launch. If you were a NASA engineer, would you let the shuttle fly again before solving this problem completely? Why or why not?
