West Oahu beats defending champs Curacao 7-6 with a home run in the seventh inning
Racing toward his cheering teammates as he rounded third base, Michael Memea held his right hand high in victory. Memea had just hit a home run that secured the Little League World Series championship title for West Oahu of Ewa Beach, Hawaii.
The U.S. team beat the defending champions from Willemstad, Curacao, an island nation in the Caribbean. The final score was 7-6 in the game, played in front of 25,506 fans in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Hawaii Rallies to Win
In the sixth inning, it looked like the Caribbean team was headed to a second championship title. Hawaii was down 6-3, with runners on second and third base and nobody out. Then Hawaii뭩 Ty Tirpak hit a bunt base hit brining his teammate Vonn Fe뭓o home. Zachary Rosete hit a single to narrow the score to 6-5 with no one out.
Tying the game 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth was Alaka뭝 Aglipay뭩 groundball to second base. This brought home Rosete and forced the game into an extra inning. (Little League games have six innings, while Major League Baseball games have nine innings.)
Extra Innings History
The last time a World Series game stretched into extra innings was 1971, when Taipei, China beat Gary, Indiana, 12-3 in nine innings. The West Oahu team didn뭪 allow the Curacao team to score in the top of the seventh and entered the bottom of the inning to cheers of "U.S.A, U.S.A."
That뭩 when Memea hit the game-winning home run off pitcher Chris Garcia. The home run brought the Little League World Series title to Hawaii for the first time ever. Holding the winner뭩 plaque, Hawaii manager Layton Aliviado celebrated the win with his team. "Today, I'm real happy," he said. "Our dream came true."

한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ Hawaii team won the championship by score 7 to 6.
✅ The Hawaii team won the championship by a score of 7 to 6.

한국어에서는 팀 이름 앞에 관사를 쓰지 않지만, 영어에서는 팀을 지칭할 때 "the"를 붙여야 합니다. 또한 "by score"가 아니라 "by a score of"가 올바른 표현입니다. 스포츠 점수를 말할 때 이 패턴을 기억하세요: "by a score of A to B."
