For fifty years the theme park Disney calls the "happiest place on earth" has delivered smiles to kids and adults alike. On July 17, thousands of fans of Mickey, Minnie and the Disney gang came together to celebrate Disneyland뭩 50th birthday in Anaheim, California.
The celebration was held in classic Disney style. There were bursts of colorful fireworks and life-sized characters, such as Goofy, Donald, Mickey, and Minnie, lined the stage.
The Celebration
Thousands of fans waited in long line for the biggest birthday party of the year. Some fans even waited in line overnight to be a part of the celebration. When the park opened, guests were given golden Mickey Mouse ears and the park was decorated with other gold items for the special event.
As a special birthday gift, Disneyland received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for its contribution to the entertainment industry.
Guests of Honor
Actor Art Linkletter, 93, kicked-off the birthday celebration, which was held in front of the decorated Sleeping Beauty castle. Linkletter also hosted Disneyland's opening day ceremonies back in 1955. Linkletter introduced special guests such as Diane Disney Miller, daughter of Disneyland뭩 founder creator of Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters,Walt Disney.
California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, also came to show his support and appreciation to Disneyland. "This is an engine that drives California tourism and our economy," he said. "Thank you for 50 wonderful years."
Disney Around the World
Since the 1955 opening of Disneyland in California, ten other Disney parks have opened worldwide. One of the most popular parks is Disney World in Orlando, Florida. It opened in 1971. Other places with Disney theme parks include Tokyo, Japan and Paris, France. On September 12, 2005 a new Disney park in Hong Kong will join the list.
