Scientists discover two new lemur species on the African island nation of Madagascar
Some of the world뭩 most exotic animals roam the African island of Madagascar. This month, scientists added two new species to the list of animals that can be found only on the island nation. Two new types of lemurs were discovered in one of the most studied rain forests of Madagascar.
Tiny Animals, Big Find
The first new species is not much bigger than a mouse and spends most of its time in trees. It has a white stripe on its nose, maroon, orange and white fur, and short, rounded ears.
It was named Microcebus lehilahytsara, which means good man in Malagasy, the language of Madagascar. The lemur is named in honor of Steve Goodman, a scientist with World Wildlife Fund and Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History.
The second species is called Mirza zaza. It is nocturnal, has a long bushy tail and is the size of a gray squirrel. Zaza is the Malagasy word for child.
"With this name the new lemur is dedicated to Madagascar's children, to remind them of their responsibility for preserving the island's unique biodiversity for future generations," said a statement from the Field Museum.
Rare Animals
Scientists made the discovery after analyzing the makeup of both lemurs. The two new discoveries bring the total number of known lemur species to 49.
Lemurs are the closest living relatives to our ancient primate ancestors who lived about 55 million years ago. They live only on Madagascar and are considered the most endangered of all primates. One-third of lemur species are extinct. Sadly, many lemur species continue to be threatened by hunting and habitat destruction.
Fast Facts: Madagascar
Madagascar lies about 250 miles off the east coast of Africa. It is the fourth largest island in the world (slightly less than twice the size of Arizona).
The island was first visited by European sailors in the year 1500.
Unique wildlife and one-of-a-kind butterflies, birds and much more live on the island.

Korean Trap! /
Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
섬 위에 있다는 개념이기 때문에 "in"이 아닌 "on the island"로 표현하세요.
Discussion
Discuss with your teacher.
- The new lemur species was named after scientist Steve Goodman. If you could name a newly discovered animal, what would you name it and why?
- Madagascar is home to many animals found nowhere else on Earth. What do you think could happen to these unique species if their rain forests are destroyed?
- Scientists discovered these lemurs in one of the most studied rain forests. Does it surprise you that new species can still be found in well-known areas? Why or why not?
