Eye Contact
In many Western societies, including the United States, a person who does not
maintain “good eye contact” is regarded as being slightly suspicious, or a “shifty”
character. Americans unconsciously associate people who avoid eye contact
as unfriendly, insecure, untrustworthy, inattentive, and impersonal.
However, in contrast, Japanese children are taught in school to direct their gaze
at the region of their teacher’s Adam’s apple or tie knot, and, as adults,
Japanese lower their eyes when speaking to a superior, a gesture of respect.
Latin American cultures, as well as some African cultures, such as Nigeria
have longer looking time, but prolonged eye contact from an individual of lower status
is considered disrespectful. In the US, it is considered rude to stare – regardless
of who is looking at whom. In contrast, the polite Englishman is taught to pay strict
attention to a speaker, to listen carefully, and to blink his eyes to let the speaker
know he or she has been understood as well as heard. Americans signal interest
and comprehension by bobbing the heads or grunting.
A widening of the eyes can also be interpreted differently, depending on circumstances
and culture. Take, for instance, the case of an American and a Chinese discussing
the terms of a proposed contract. Regardless of the language in which the proposed
contract is carried out, the US negotiator may interpret a Chinese person’s
widened eyes as an expression of astonishment instead of as a danger signal
(its true meaning) of politely expressed anger.

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ "I couldn't see his eyes because he avoided my eye contact."
✅ "I couldn't read him because he avoided eye contact."

한국어에서는 '눈을 마주치다/피하다'라고 해서 "eye contact"를 소유격(my, his)과 함께 쓰는 실수를 자주 합니다. 영어에서 "eye contact"는 소유격 없이 단독으로 쓰는 것이 자연스럽습니다. 또한 눈을 피하는 것이 상대를 '읽기 어렵다(couldn't read him)'는 표현과 함께 쓰이는 것이 더 원어민다운 표현입니다.

Discussion

Discuss with your teacher.
선생님과 토론해 보세요.

  1. The passage says Americans see people who avoid eye contact as "untrustworthy." Do you think Koreans judge people the same way, or differently? Why?
본문에서 미국인들은 눈을 마주치지 않는 사람을 '신뢰할 수 없다'고 본다고 했습니다. 한국인들도 같은 방식으로 판단한다고 생각하나요, 아니면 다르게 판단하나요? 이유는 무엇인가요?
  2. In Japan, lowering your eyes when speaking to a superior is a sign of respect. Is there a similar custom in Korean culture? Can you give an example?
일본에서는 윗사람에게 말할 때 눈을 내리까는 것이 존경의 표시라고 합니다. 한국 문화에도 비슷한 관습이 있나요? 예를 들어 줄 수 있나요?
  3. Have you ever had a misunderstanding with someone from another culture because of differences in eye contact or body language?
눈 맞춤이나 몸짓 언어의 차이 때문에 다른 문화권 사람과 오해가 생긴 적이 있나요?
