the top 100 most commonly used words in English.
***
There was a time when people really had a way with words.
They said and did whatever they could, so that each little thing
would then be made good and clear, both at home and all over the world.
They knew that it was very important to use a few short words,
because most of the long ones were too hard for them.
The only other thing about words is the number of school children
who are called names even if they know how to say something right,
but can't find a way to use it in a sentence.
By the way, many more families have been after their children to like school.
Well, how about you?

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ I need to study much vocabularies to speak English well.
✅ I need to study a lot of vocabulary to speak English well.

"Vocabulary"는 불가산 명사(uncountable noun)이기 때문에 복수형 "vocabularies"로 쓸 수 없습니다. 한국어에서는 "단어들"이라고 복수로 표현하기 때문에 영어에서도 복수형을 쓰는 실수를 자주 합니다. "Many words" 또는 "a lot of vocabulary"라고 표현해야 자연스럽습니다.

Discussion

Discuss with your teacher.
선생님과 토론해 보세요.

  1. The lesson says mastering the basics is better than learning extensive vocabulary. Do you agree? Why or why not?
이 레슨에서는 방대한 어휘를 배우는 것보다 기초를 마스터하는 것이 낫다고 합니다. 동의하시나요? 그 이유는 무엇인가요?
  2. If you could only use 100 English words for the rest of your life, what kinds of words would you choose — nouns, verbs, or adjectives?
평생 영어 단어 100개만 쓸 수 있다면 명사, 동사, 형용사 중 어떤 종류의 단어를 선택하시겠어요?
  3. How has learning common, everyday English words helped you more than memorizing advanced vocabulary for tests like TOEIC?
토익 같은 시험을 위한 고급 어휘 암기보다 일상적인 영어 단어를 배운 것이 실생활에서 어떻게 더 도움이 되었나요?
