Warm-up

Talk about these questions with your teacher.
선생님과 이야기해 보세요.

  1. When you write your birthday, which preposition do you use — on, in, or at? For example, how would you say the month and the exact date differently?
생일을 말할 때 어떤 전치사를 사용하나요? 예를 들어, 월과 정확한 날짜를 각각 어떻게 다르게 표현할까요?
  2. Think about your daily routine. Can you describe one thing you do using "at," "on," and "in"? (e.g., at 7 a.m., on Monday, in the morning)
일상생활을 떠올려 보세요. at, on, in을 각각 사용해서 하나씩 말해 볼 수 있나요? (예: at 7 a.m., on Monday, in the morning)

Reading

Read the passage with your teacher.
선생님과 함께 지문을 읽어보세요.

Use: ON, IN and AT
I'll meet AT the bus stop ON Main Street.
The tickets will be IN and envelope ON my desk.
The bus stopped AT the traffic light.
A year is a SPACE, and so is a MONTH or a WEEK. Therefore they would
require the preposition IN. e.g. IN 1997, IN August, IN the third week of
August.
Next, you would show that the actual date is a column or line IN that
week/month and thus requires ON Monday.
The hour would be a point on the day line and thus require AT, as in
AT 6 a.m., AT 16:30 IN the afternoon.

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ I was born in January 5th.
✅ I was born on January 5th.

한국어에서는 날짜를 말할 때 항상 '에'를 사용하지만, 영어에서는 특정 날짜 앞에 반드시 on을 써야 합니다. 월(month)에는 in을 쓰지만, 날짜(date)가 포함되면 on으로 바뀐다는 점을 기억하세요. 예: in January (1월에) vs. on January 5th (1월 5일에).

Discussion

Discuss with your teacher.
선생님과 토론해 보세요.

  1. Why do you think English uses three different prepositions (on, in, at) for time and place, while Korean mostly uses just one particle (에)? Does this make English harder to learn?
영어에서는 시간과 장소에 on, in, at 세 가지 전치사를 쓰는데, 한국어는 대부분 '에' 하나만 씁니다. 이 점이 영어를 더 어렵게 만든다고 생각하나요?
  2. The lesson explains that a year is a "space," a date is a "line," and an hour is a "point." Does imagining time this way help you choose the right preposition? Can you think of other helpful tricks?
레슨에서 연도는 '공간', 날짜는 '선', 시간은 '점'이라고 설명합니다. 시간을 이렇게 상상하면 전치사를 고르는 데 도움이 되나요? 다른 유용한 방법이 있을까요?
  3. If someone said, "I'll meet you in the bus stop on 3 p.m.," how many preposition mistakes can you find? How would you correct them and explain your reasoning?
누군가 "I'll meet you in the bus stop on 3 p.m."이라고 말했다면, 전치사 실수를 몇 개나 찾을 수 있나요? 어떻게 고치고 그 이유를 설명하시겠어요?
