Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ The opposite of "remember" is "not remember."
✅ The opposite of "remember" is "forget."

한국어에서는 반대말을 만들 때 "안 ~하다" (예: 안 기억하다)처럼 부정어를 붙이는 경우가 많습니다. 하지만 영어에는 완전히 다른 단어로 된 반의어가 따로 있는 경우가 많습니다. 예를 들어 remember↔forget, accept↔reject, honest↔dishonest처럼 별개의 단어를 사용해야 자연스럽습니다.

Discussion

Discuss with your teacher.
선생님과 토론해 보세요.

  1. Some antonyms are formed by adding a prefix like "dis-" or "un-" (honest → dishonest). Can you think of other examples? Why do you think English uses prefixes to create opposites?
어떤 반의어는 "dis-"나 "un-" 같은 접두사를 붙여서 만듭니다 (honest → dishonest). 다른 예를 떠올릴 수 있나요? 영어가 왜 접두사를 사용해서 반대말을 만든다고 생각하나요?
  2. In the quiz, all the answer choices could fit in the sentence, but only one was the true antonym. Why is it important to know the exact opposite, not just a similar word?
퀴즈에서 모든 보기가 문장에 어울릴 수 있지만, 진짜 반의어는 하나뿐이었습니다. 비슷한 단어가 아닌 정확한 반대말을 아는 것이 왜 중요할까요?
  3. Do you think learning words in antonym pairs (strong/weak, accept/reject) is a good way to build vocabulary? What other strategies do you use to remember new words?
반의어 쌍으로 단어를 외우는 것(strong/weak, accept/reject)이 어휘력을 키우는 좋은 방법이라고 생각하나요? 새로운 단어를 기억하기 위해 어떤 다른 방법을 사용하나요?
