Reading

Read the passage with your teacher.

ElephantiasisChristos is a parasitic disease which is transmitted from human to human
by mosquito bites. The parasite tends to lodge in and block the lymph nodes
that drain into the lower extremities, producing massive enlargement and deformity
of the legs and genitalia. Dramatic photographs of those affected appear in every
infectious disease text.
Organisms that cause the disease are Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi,
and B. timori, all transmitted by mosquitoes. Lymphatic filariasis currently affects
120 million people worldwide, and 40 million of these people have been seriously
infected with the disease, which is extremely rare in the Western countries,
and is found almost exclusively in the tropics. The disease is also called bancrofitan
filariasis and lymphatic filariasis. Brugia malayi causes a similar disease,
while Onchocerca volvulus causes many disorders in addition to elephantiasis.

Korean Trap! /

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.

❌ The disease is transmitted from mosquito.
✅ The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. / The disease is transmitted through mosquito bites.

"from"은 사람 대 사람처럼 감염 출처를 나타낼 때 씁니다 (예: transmitted from human to human).

Discussion

Discuss with your teacher.

  1. The passage says 120 million people are affected by lymphatic filariasis worldwide. What responsibility do wealthier nations have in helping to fight diseases that mostly affect tropical countries?
  2. People with elephantiasis often suffer from social stigma due to the visible deformity of their limbs. How can societies better support people living with disfiguring diseases?
  3. Mosquito-borne diseases like elephantiasis and malaria continue to be major health threats. What methods of mosquito control do you think are most effective, and are there any environmental concerns with those methods?
