A bugging scandal involving powerful figures from various walks of life is shaking the country.
The scandal erupted as what has been called "X-File" tape recordings which were illegally wiretapped by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) during the 1997 presidential election campaign came to light.
As the conversations between the owner of a newspaper company and a chaebol executive were made public, the people called for an immediate end to deeply-rooted dirty connections among the government, the business and the press. They then urged the prosecutors to get on investigation immediately.
The record tape contained conversations of the notables of the government, the business and the press during their dinner. Conversations were illegally wiretapped by an NIS special team, previously known as the Agency for National Security Planning(NSP), for five years from 1993 to 1998 during Kim Young-sam administration.
According to the tape handed in to MBC, the notable people allegedly talked about the presidential election, financial donations to presidential candidates, and setting up a single channel for political fund raising.
MBC was going to air the entire tape. However it could not do so because Samsung filed a lawsuit asking for stopping the disclosure and the court accepted. The court said, "MBC cannot broadcast the original voices, cite the conversations, or name the people."
Now, since people know the existence of the problematic tape and its illegality, they call for the disclosure of the entire contents of the tape for the public interest and people's right-to-know.

Korean Trap! /
Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
Discussion

- If you accidentally heard a secretly recorded conversation that revealed corruption, would you make it public? Why or why not?
- Where should the line be drawn between protecting national security and protecting citizens' right to privacy?
