tariff
A tax charged by a government on imported or exported goods. 관세
The government raised the tariff on imported steel to protect domestic manufacturers.
customs clearance
The official process of getting permission to bring goods into or out of a country. 통관 (절차)
Our shipment was delayed because customs clearance took longer than expected.
bill of lading
An official document listing the goods being shipped and serving as a receipt from the carrier. 선하증권
The freight company issued a bill of lading once the containers were loaded onto the vessel.
freight
Goods transported in bulk by truck, train, ship, or aircraft; also the cost of such transportation. 화물; 운송료
We decided to ship by sea because the freight cost was much lower than air transport.
quota
A limited quantity of a particular product that is officially allowed to be imported or exported. 수입·수출 할당량
The country imposed a strict quota on textile imports to support local producers.
letter of credit
A document from a bank guaranteeing that a buyer's payment to a seller will be received on time and for the correct amount. 신용장
The exporter requested a letter of credit before shipping the order to ensure secure payment.

❌ We need to do customs clearance before the goods can pass the border.
✅ We need to clear customs before the goods can cross the border.
한국어에서는 '통관하다'를 직역해서 "do customs clearance"라고 말하기 쉽지만, 영어에서는 "clear customs"라는 표현이 자연스럽습니다. 또한 국경을 '통과하다'는 "pass"가 아니라 "cross the border"가 올바른 표현입니다. 무역 영어에서는 이런 고정된 표현(collocation)을 함께 익혀 두는 것이 중요합니다.
