MEANING: sell something by being very aggressive
EXAMPLE:
The car salesman gave us a hard sell so we decided to go to another dealer.

The company began to go into the red when the price of oil began to rise rapidly.

MEANING: in preparation, being planned or worked on
EXAMPLE:
The camera company has a new automatic camera in the works but nobody knows about it yet.

MEANING: make a price higher
EXAMPLE:
The steel companies decided to jack up the price of steel at the beginning of the year.

한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
한국어로 '흑자'를 직역하려다 보면 'black color'라고 말하기 쉽지만, 영어에서 in the black은 그 자체로 '흑자인, 수익을 내고 있는'이라는 뜻의 관용 표현입니다. 여기서 black은 색상이 아니라 회계 장부에서 이익을 검은 잉크로 기록한 데서 유래한 것이므로 color를 붙이면 안 됩니다.
