Animals can become famous for many different reasons. One cow, for example, is known because of one of the worst disasters in history. The event, often called “the Great Chicago Fire,” began in a barn that belonged to a woman named Mrs. O’Leary. Within minutes, buildings all over the city were on fire. Much of the city was burned.
Afterwards, officials and newspaper writers tried to find out just how the fire in Mrs. O’Leary’s barn had gotten started. Most of them agreed that Mrs. O’ Leary’s cow must have knocked over the gas lamp. The straw and hay in the building had quickly caught fire.
