Since 1874, four buildings have had the name Madison Square Garden.
The first building, on Madison Avenue between 26th & 27th streets, was called the Great Roman Hippodrome. It was built by P.T. Barnum to house his circus. When he sold it in 1879, the name was changed to Madison Square Garden. The first building was torn down in 1889, and a new building opened in 1890. At one time, this second building was turned into a swimming pool that held 1,500,000 gallons of water.
The third Madison Square Garden opened in 1925. It was located on Eight Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets. It went up in only 249 days. The fourth Madison Square Garden opened in 1968. The New York Knicks won their first NBA title on May 8,1970, at this Madison Square Garden.
