When the spacecraft Apollo 16 landed on the moon in December 1972, George Carruthers was not part of the crew. Carruthers, though, was very important to the event in a different way.
Born in 1940, Carruthers is one of this country’s leading scientists. For many years, he worked on America’s space program. He made a special tool that could be used to find out exactly what the rocks and the dust on the moon were made of. In 1972, this special tool accompanied the Apollo 16 crew to the moon. The tool that Carruthers made helped scientists understand the moon better than ever before.
