Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ "I need to face the problem."
✅ "I need to face up to the problem."

한국어에서는 '직면하다'가 한 단어이기 때문에 영어에서도 'face'만 쓰는 실수를 자주 합니다. 하지만 '현실이나 어려운 상황을 받아들이고 대처하다'라는 의미를 강조할 때는 반드시 'face up to'라는 multi-word verb를 사용해야 합니다. 'face'만 쓰면 단순히 '~을 향하다'라는 뜻이 되어 의미가 달라집니다.

❌ "Can you fill me while she's away?"
✅ "Can you fill in for me while she's away?"

한국어로 '대신하다'는 한 단어이지만, 영어에서 누군가를 임시로 대체한다고 할 때는 'fill in (for someone)'이라는 표현을 써야 합니다. 'fill' 단독으로는 '채우다'라는 뜻이므로 전치사 'in'을 빠뜨리면 전혀 다른 의미가 됩니다.
