I. Subject Matter: TOEIC Speaking Part 2 : Describe a picture
II. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
Create coherent description of the photo given (page 17)Create appropriate sentences in describing each part by following the steps
III. Procedure:
a. Ask the student to describe the picture on page 17 and then compare the students answer with the model answers.
Step 1: Create introductory sentence that answers WH-question for the picture. Phrases that can be used :
This is a picture.....In this picture...What I can see in this picture...
Step 2: Locate the main subject of the photo. Create sentences regarding the main subject. (location, feature, action). The main characters are mostly in the middle.
*Use Present continuous or there is/are + verb-ing*Present simple or there is/are
Step 3: Look at the remaining details in the photo. Create sentences regarding the remaining details. Don’t forget to use transitional words and phrases to show cohesion.
EX: On the left part/side of the picture On the right part/side of the picture In the foreground of the picture In the background of the picture On either side of the picture At the left of the picture On the right-hand side of the picture At the bottom right of the picture At the top left of the picture In the middle
Step 4: Give extra information about the picture: What is happening, has happened or will happen. This can serve as your closing statement
Model Answer:
Step 1: This is a picture of a crowded multi lane thoroughfare.
Step 2: You can see many cars, trucks and minivans in each lane of the road. Some of the cars have their break lights on.
Step 3: On the right, you can see some posts, many of them with traffic signs and even traffic lights. There are also traffic signs and lights on the median.
Step 4: The cars must be headed downtown because there are a number of tall buildings in the background of the picture.

Common mistakes Korean speakers make when describing pictures.
사진 묘사할 때 한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
사진 묘사에서 'There is/are + 명사 + 동사' 구조를 쓸 때, 동사를 원형 그대로 쓰는 실수가 많습니다. 진행 중인 동작을 표현할 때는 반드시 'There is/are + 명사 + V-ing' 형태를 사용해야 합니다. 한국어에는 이런 구분이 없어서 자주 틀리는 부분이니 사진 묘사 연습 시 항상 주의하세요.
한국어 '~이 있다'를 영어로 옮길 때 'have'를 쓰는 실수가 매우 흔합니다. 사진 속 존재를 설명할 때는 'There is/are'를 사용해야 합니다. 'Have'는 주어가 소유하는 경우에만 씁니다.
