I. Subject Matter: TOEIC Speaking Part 5 : Propose a solution
II. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:Practice giving a solution in simple problemsUnderstand all the steps in answering this task
III. Procedure:
a. Define the task expected in q10
Definition: In this part of the test, the test taker should give a solution to the problem given. The test taker should always get the key words in the problem to properly address the situation.
b. Give simple situations wherein the student will give his or her own solution.
c. Discuss the steps and ask the student to create sentences per step.
Step 1: Start the message. Say who the message is for. Say who you are, where you are from (if relevant), and why you are calling.
e.g "Hello! This is a message for Mrs. Fisher. This is Tom Simple from ABC Electronics, and I’m returning your call.”
Step 2: Acknowledge the message you received and summarize the problem
e.g "I got your message regarding ourvacuum cleaner that’s causing you a lot of problems."
Step 3: Apologize/ Sympathize
e.g “ First of all, I am really sorry for the inconvenience we have caused you.
Step 4: Explain your situation e.g After checking the situation, I’ve found out that I-VAC 200 vacuum model that you have has some technical problems. So we will recall all the cleaners starting next week. “
STEP 4: Propose a solution
e.g “ So I suggest that you visit our website to sign up for the recall. You must leave your address and phone number, so we can arrange a staff member to visit your house to pick up the product. Oh, please also leave a note saying what tie is good for our staff to visit you. “
STEP 5 Give compensation (if necessary) / Supplementation
e.g “We completely admit that this is our fault. So to compensate you, we’ll give you a voucher for you to use on your next purchase ”
STEP 6 End the messagee.g “Once again, I’d like to apologize for the inconvenience we have caused you. If you wish to talk more about this after, please call e back at 555-1234. Thank you!”

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
한국어에서는 "~하세요"처럼 직접적으로 지시하는 것이 자연스럽지만, 영어에서 해결책을 제안할 때 "You should~"라고 하면 상대방에게 명령하는 느낌을 줍니다. TOEIC Speaking에서는 "Let me suggest~", "How about~", "I'd recommend~"처럼 부드럽게 제안하는 표현을 사용해야 높은 점수를 받을 수 있습니다. 또한 먼저 상대방의 문제를 인정(acknowledge)한 후 해결책을 제시하는 순서를 지켜야 합니다.
