I. Subject Matter: TOEIC Speaking Part 1 : Read a text aloud (PAUSING)
II. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to: know the areas to pausepractice reading the passages using all the things that has been discussed since day 1 discuss test tips and techniques
III. Procedure:
a. Discuss the areas that needs to be paused.
Where to pause:
1. after a verb + short subject: The dog (p) ran away last night.
2. after a long subject: A clean driving licence, the ability to operate under pressure and 5 years' experience in marketing (p) are the only criteria stipulated by the selection panel.
3. after a coma or period: I do like cookies, however, (p) I prefer cake.
4. before a phrase or a clause: Variety is the (p) spice of life.
5. before a conjunction: A good laugh (p) and a long sleep are the best medicine.
6. before a long abject: While showing his (p) friends, neighbors and colleagues his travel piece, Scott learned that many of them wanted to travel.
7. before a preposition: The road to hell is usually paved with good intentions.
8. before a relative pronoun: This is the bank (p) that accepted my identification.
c. Ask the student to read the passage with proper pausing.

Come to Bob’s Pets / for all your pet needs./ We have all kinds of dogs, / from purebred poodles / to mutts of all sizes. / We also have all kinds of cats, / including Persians, / and a wide assortment of cat accessories / including scratch posts and kitty litter. / Wait! / There is more! / We have gerbils! / Gobs of them! / And everything you need / to house, / feed / and pamper your pet. / It’s all here / at Bob’s Pets. / This week only / we have a special on bunnies. / You can buy half a dozen bunnies / at half the price. / That is six bunnies / for the low, / low price / of $6.99. / Only at Bob’s! /

Let’s take a look at the life of Ms. Geraldine, / one of the greatest legislators of this state. / She is known as a great woman politician / but / she passed more legislation / during her tenure in the legislature / than anyone else./ That would make her a great legislator / regardless of gender. / She worked tireless hours / cajoling other Senators to support her bills./ She will always be remembered for the purple frames on her glasses. / Her husband once remarked /she looked regal in them./Good bye, Ms. Geraldine. / You will not / be forgotten. //
d. Read the passage with the correct pausing, pronunciation, intonation and stress.

IV: Test Tips: Review the test tips to the studentUse the punctuation marks to help (pause briefly after periods and commas).Don’t pause in the middle of a thought groupAuxiliary verbs—could, should, would--are not usually stressedTransition words, e.g. because, although, also, until, however are often marked by a rising intonationPrepare quickly but carefully– 45-seconds preparation time
V. Test TechniquesRelax.Look out for any unknown words. Think about where the stress goes in individual words.Look for the list, and remember the up, up, and down intonation. Are there any questions? Remember the upward intonation for Yes/No Questions and downward intonation for Wh-questions.Do not rush. Keep a steady pace, and pause at commas and periods.Do not pause in the middle of the thought groups.Think about which words to stress and how to say the unstressed words.Watch for transition words and use the appropriate intonation.

Common mistakes Korean speakers make when pausing during read-aloud tasks.
낭독 시 끊어 읽기에서 한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
(긴 주어를 한 번에 끊지 않고 숨이 차서 중간에 어색하게 멈춤)
(긴 주어가 끝난 후 동사 앞에서 자연스럽게 한 번 끊기)
한국어는 주어가 짧고 동사가 문장 끝에 오기 때문에, 영어의 긴 주어를 어디서 끊어야 할지 감을 잡기 어렵습니다. 한국인 학습자들은 긴 주어 중간에서 불규칙하게 멈추거나, 반대로 끊지 않고 한 번에 읽으려다 발음이 뭉개지는 경우가 많습니다. 긴 주어 덩어리가 끝나고 동사가 시작되는 지점에서 짧게 pause를 넣으면 의미 전달이 훨씬 명확해집니다.
(쉼표 위치를 무시하고 엉뚱한 곳에서 멈춤)
(however 뒤 쉼표 다음에 자연스럽게 끊기)
한국인 학습자들은 영어 문장의 쉼표(comma)를 단순한 기호로 여기고 무시하는 경향이 있습니다. 특히 however, therefore 같은 연결 부사 뒤의 쉼표에서 pause를 넣지 않으면 문장의 논리적 흐름이 끊어져 듣는 사람이 의미를 파악하기 어렵습니다. 쉼표와 마침표는 반드시 pause의 신호로 인식하고 짧게 멈추는 습관을 들이세요.
