I. Subject Matter: TOEIC Speaking Part 1 : Read a text aloud (INTONATION / STRESS)
II. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:know what intonation is and how to properly follow the correct intonationKnow the proper way of pausing when reading the passagePractice the proper stressing of words that has the same spelling (N and V)Be aware of which syllable to stress (in short and long words)Stress key words in the paragraph
III. Procedure:
a. Define intonation and give the intonation rules
Definition: pitch or tone of your voice when you speak.
Rules of Intonation:
2 patterns of intonation:
1. rising – pitch of voice goes up
At the end of a yes or no questionAny question that ends with the name of a person
2. falling – pitch of voice goes down
A statement, command, or request.Questions that begin with who, what, where, when, or how.Questions that have choices – the last choice given in the question goes down; the choices before the last one goes up.
b. Give sample sentences for the rising and falling intonation
c. Define stress and give the points that needs to be stressed (main content words, function words and combined words). Those are the words that needs to be stressed. (page 3 and 4)
*Main content words are nouns, noun phrases,main verbs, times and dates,adjectives,adverbs, and even negatives.
*Function words are articles, prepositions, conjunctions and auxiliaries [Statements using the auxiliary verbs ( is, are, can, have, will) are usually unstressed. This means that the vowel sound becomes shorter and consonants may change or be dropped.]
d. Basing from the passages in page 3 and 4, ask the student to find all the main content words, function words and combined words.
Passage 1: Come to Bob’s Pets for all your pet needs. We have all kinds of dogs, from purebred poodles to mutts of all sizes. We also have all kinds of cats, including Persians, and a wide assortment of cat accessories including scratch posts and kitty litter. Wait! There is more! We have gerbils! Gobs of them! And everything you need to house, feed and pamper your pet. It’s all here at Bob’s Pets. This week only we have a special on bunnies. You can buy half a dozen bunnies at half the price. That is six bunnies for the low, low price of $6.99. Only at Bob’s!

Good bye, Ms. Geraldine. You will notbe forgotten.

✅ "Where do you LIVE?" (with falling intonation ↓)

한국어는 의문문에서 항상 억양이 올라가지만, 영어에서는 who, what, where, when, how로 시작하는 의문문(WH-questions)은 끝에서 억양이 내려갑니다. 반면 Yes/No 질문(예: "Do you like coffee?")만 억양이 올라갑니다. 이 차이를 구분하지 않으면 영어가 부자연스럽게 들릴 수 있습니다.
