B: Yes, Mr. Sung told me about that. When I heard the company is planning to farm Mr. Kim out to the Busan branch, I couldn't believe my ears.
A: to tell the truth, I was more than a little surprise at the news. I don't understand why the company announced this appointment to Busan, so far from headquarters. I thought you'd be promoted to director at this time.
B: Search me. There's no telling what happens in the future. You know, I thought the company would show some of us the door but it didn't. That's the bright side.
A: Yeah, I know. But they went too far this time. Mr. Kim did whatever it took for this company to succeed. He worked his fingers to the bone. I bet there's no one who knows more than him when it comes to marketing.
B: That's the company policy. They switch people around from time to time to stimulate them.
A: It seems more like an exercise in futility to me.

한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
한국어로는 '뼈 빠지게 일했다'로 단수·복수 구분이 없지만, 영어 관용표현은 반드시 fingers(복수형)를 써야 합니다. 손가락이 여러 개이므로 복수형이 자연스럽고, 이것이 정해진 관용 표현입니다. 단수형 finger를 쓰면 원어민에게 어색하게 들립니다.
한국어 '귀를 의심했다'에서는 단수·복수를 구분하지 않지만, 영어에서는 귀가 두 개이므로 항상 ears(복수형)를 사용합니다. 신체 부위가 짝을 이루는 관용표현(eyes, ears, fingers 등)은 대부분 복수형으로 쓰인다는 점을 기억하세요.
'Search me'는 '나도 몰라'라는 뜻의 독립된 표현으로, 뒤에 바로 절을 연결하지 않습니다. 또한 'farm out'은 구동사(phrasal verb)이므로 대명사 목적어는 반드시 사이에 넣어 farm him out으로 써야 합니다. farm out him은 틀린 어순입니다.
