WOMAN: I put all my traveler's cheques in this special envelope and now I can't find it. Can you re-issue them?
MAN: Did you carry your receipts separately and sign each cheque?
WOMAN: Yes, here are the receipts.
MAN: There's no problem then. We have some necessary forms for you to fill out and you can be on your way.
WOMAN: But how long will I have to wait for the new cheques? I'm just in town for a few days and I'm on my way to the Grand Canyon.
MAN: We should be able to wrap this up and have you on the road in about twenty minutes.
WOMAN: That's a relief! When I saw that the cheques were missing I thought?that my??vacation had come to a screeching halt.

한국인 학습자들은 'screeching'(끼익 소리나는)과 'screening'(상영, 검사)을 발음이 비슷해서 자주 혼동합니다. 'Come to a screeching halt'는 '갑자기 멈추다'라는 관용 표현으로, 자동차가 급정거할 때 타이어에서 나는 끼익 소리(screech)에서 유래했습니다. 'Screening'은 영화 상영이나 건강 검진을 뜻하는 전혀 다른 단어이므로 주의하세요.
한국어로는 '새 수표를 기다리다'에서 조사 '를'만 쓰면 되지만, 영어에서는 'wait' 다음에 반드시 전치사 'for'가 필요합니다. 'Wait'는 자동사이기 때문에 목적어를 바로 붙일 수 없고, 'wait for + 대상'으로 써야 합니다. 비슷하게 'wait for the bus', 'wait for my turn'처럼 항상 'for'를 함께 사용하세요.
