Whether
명사절을 이끌어 '~인지 어떤지'의 뜻을 나타내는 접속사이다. Whether or not은 '어느 쪽이든, 하여간, ~인지 아닌지'의 표현이다.

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ I don't know that she raises her children alone or not.
✅ I don't know whether she raises her children alone or not.

한국어에서는 '~인지 아닌지'를 표현할 때 'that'과 'whether'의 구분이 없어서, 많은 학습자가 "or not"이 포함된 문장에서도 습관적으로 'that'을 사용합니다. 하지만 '~인지 아닌지'처럼 두 가지 가능성을 나타낼 때는 반드시 whether를 사용해야 합니다. 'that'은 단순히 사실을 전달할 때 쓰고, 선택이나 불확실성을 나타낼 때는 'whether ~ or not'을 쓴다고 기억하세요.

❌ The mother asked her husband whether he can help raising the children or not.
✅ The mother asked her husband whether he could help raise the children or not.

간접 의문문에서 주절이 과거 시제(asked)이면 whether 뒤의 동사도 과거형으로 시제를 일치시켜야 합니다. 'can'은 'could'로 바꿔야 합니다. 또한 'help' 뒤에는 동사원형(raise)을 쓰는 것이 자연스럽고, 'help raising'은 어색한 표현입니다.
