Unit 1-9 / Part 2
When you're hungry and you're low on cash, a fast food restaurant is the
place for you. Not only is it cheap, but it's also very appetizing. However,
eating it too often can damage your health. Having fast food once in a while
is still okay, so try to stay home for meals and enjoy your meal with your
family as much as you can.

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정

Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.

❌ "By the time I arrived at the fast food restaurant, my friends already ate all the fries."
✅ "By the time I arrived at the fast food restaurant, my friends had already eaten all the fries."

"By the time"은 과거의 어떤 시점을 기준으로 그 이전에 완료된 일을 말할 때 사용하므로, 뒤에 오는 절은 반드시 과거완료(had + p.p.)를 써야 합니다. 한국어에는 대과거 시제가 따로 없어서 "이미 먹었다"를 단순과거(ate)로 쓰는 실수를 자주 합니다. "By the time + 과거시제, 주어 + had already + 과거분사"의 패턴을 꼭 기억하세요!

❌ "I'm low on cash, so let's go to fast food."
✅ "I'm low on cash, so let's go to a fast food restaurant."

한국어에서는 "패스트푸드 가자"처럼 장소를 줄여서 말하지만, 영어에서 "fast food"는 음식 자체를 뜻하는 명사이지 장소가 아닙니다. 장소를 말할 때는 반드시 "a fast food restaurant" 또는 "a fast food place"라고 표현해야 자연스럽습니다.
